Editor’s note: Today, I am pleased to share with you a guest blog from JoQuese Satterwhite, a Senior Quality Analyst Supervisor here at Medtronic. In today’s post, JoQuese talks about employees living out our mission both in and out of the workplace. This year, employees had the opportunity to attend diabetes walks for the American Diabetes Association and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JoQuese specifically shares about our recent participation in both the San Antonio and Los Angeles JDRF walks.
One thing that I find to be great about Medtronic is their willingness to reach out to the diabetes community. The leaders of the organization encourage employees to live out the mission: alleviating pain, restoring health, and extending life. What better way to do this than joining forces with the local JDRF team to raise money for a cure? That is exactly what hundreds of employees, family, and friends did recently at the San Antonio and Los Angeles JDRF Walks.
The JDRF Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the millions of lives of people affected by type 1 diabetes. Customers that we have the privilege to interact with everyday are able to have this special day where they join together with those that care to help celebrate and support the mission to find a cure. San Antonio and Los Angeles based employees stepped up in a big way to support the JDRF and their local diabetes communities and have risen over $95,000 to help fund the cure.
What better way to kick off the excitement for a walk than with a kick off!!! That is exactly what happened in San Antonio on September 21, 2012. Employees held a kickoff event showcasing the JDRF theme for the walk; jam packed with hot dogs, pickles, places for employees to sign up for the walk and donate to the cause. “The Field of Dreams” event was a huge success and there was a lot of participation from the employees, having over 100 employees sign up for the walk that day!
The JDRF Walk held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on November 11, 2012 was also a huge success with a total event turnout of about 12,000 people. There was a tent with games for the kids, and volunteers were on hand to pass out snacks to walkers. Lenny was also on site taking full advantage of all of the photo opportunities with enthusiastic walkers.
Medtronic employees in both locations have held various events such as bake sales, JDRF sneaker sales, raffles, team t-shirts, a 5k run for employees and family, casual passes, and Painting with a Twist where 40 plus employees came together to paint a “Tree of Life” to raise funds for the cure!
What a great feeling it is to have so many employees give so much of themselves for a worthy cause and the best part…we are not done yet! I can truly say this is a company that cares and truly puts our “Mission in Motion.”
Take a moment to check out some of our photos from the recent JDRF walks and share with us in the comments below how you like to participate in your local diabetes community!
