A couple weeks back, Naomi talked about her logbook struggles and how CareLink® Therapy Management Software really helps her take control of her health. She’s not alone — CareLink is a very popular part of our integrated system. Customers tell us they really like seeing the cause-and-effect relationships in all those colorful charts, graphs, and tables. And it’s really helpful to be able to share and discuss them with your endo.

But the biggest complaint that we’ve received about CareLink is that it’s not compatible with a Mac….until now.

That’s right, today we launched CareLink Personal 5.4 Therapy Management Software for the Mac OS platform in the United States! Not only does CareLink work with your Mac, but it supports over 35 meters, including meters with that do not have Mac support through their meter manufacturer.

If you’d like more information on how to set up your account and upload data, check out the help and support section of our web site for specific instructions.

I was able to use Carelink for the MAC soon after it was released for an hour or so (on 4th April) however it no longer seems to work - I now get the Compatibility Page stating it only works for Internet Explorer and Windows.
Has the MAC version been disabled for non USA countries (I am in the UK) ?

CareLink for Mac users isn't working for UK customers :(

Any idea when this will be fixed?

@Steve and Keith – CareLink Personal for Mac is currently only available in the US.

I've been trying to upload my pump and it just isn't completing the cycle. It gets to about 30%-40% and then it stops and says I need to check the battery and position the pump closer to the Carelink USB device. Well my pump has a battery that is about 3 hours old and the pump is either sitting right next to the Carelink USB or sitting on it. Can't get any closer. Finally getting a Mac version is awesome, now I just need it to work!

Can you please explain why Carelink is available on the Mac only in the US? I can think of no reason why you would place this restriction. It's completely crazy. Thanks.

@Justin Sorry to hear you’re having problems. If you give our helpline a shout at 1.800.646.4633 option 1, they’ll be happy to help you out.

@Julia We are working to get CareLink Personal with Mac compatibility available in all countries as soon as possible. However, before releasing our products in a geographic region (such as Europe), we are required to complete translations of all documents for the languages spoken throughout that region. We strive to get our products released to our users as quickly as possible and will keep you posted here at The LOOP when CareLink Personal for Mac is available in your region.

so you need translations for the UK?

Posted on Sun Jul 10 09:08:53 GMT 2011

I'm in Australia and find it ironic that even though I have to access the US site (http://carelink.minimed.com) website to get to the Carelink software, I can't use my Mac to do so (when I log in I still get the Compatibility page telling me I need a PC).

The excuse that translations are required, especially for english speaking countries who have to access the US site, is extremely disappointing. It's been 3 months since your announcement and still nothing??

For a company that is supposed to be at the cutting edge of diabetes management, I'm pretty disappointed in the lack of cutting edge technology to support it.

You made an announcement about Mac compatibility that comes to customers all over the world and get our hopes up, only to leave us bitterly disappointed. Sorry guys at Medtronic - FAIL.

@Karoline Thank you for your comment. You are correct that you cannot access CareLink on a Mac computer outside of the U.S. We have not released the international version yet, as it requires additional approvals and translations including translating metric systems. We understand that there is interest in many countries for Mac support for CareLink and we are working diligently to bring this version to market.

I was glad to be able to use care link on my macbook for a month...until I upgraded. to OSX 10.7...then care link won't work again....very disappointing. It only works with outdated software. The release of 10.7 wasn't a secret and Medtronic should have planned for it. I have to agree that the whole situation with technology is handled poorly. I can no longer review the results of my CGMS at home. Of course, I've called for support before since those results are so inaccurate as well. So very disappointing.

@Kevin Thanks for your feedback. We hear your frustration with CareLink Personal not yet approved for use with Mac OS 10.7/Lion and apologize for the inconvenience.

At the time we tested CareLink Personal for Mac, Apple had not yet fully launched the Mac OS 10.7/Lion system, so we couldn’t fully test the new system with our software. To make sure we tested and built all appropriate requirements, it was very important that we waited until the new system was officially released to begin our testing. We’re now working on a version of CareLink Personal that is compatible with Mac OS 10.7, which will be available once we have FDA approval.

CareLink is now available in the UK. It seemed to go live about a week ago and I had an e-mail from Medtronic support in the UK. However, it does not yet work with Lion as others have said.

..But..

In the e-mail I received from Medtronic support, it states that Lion comparability will be sorted by the end of the year..

I am really chuffed that finally I will not need to fire-up a Windows XP session with virualisation software just to use an internet portal system!

I just hope that Medtronic keep up with the way Apple push out updates on Safari etc automatically and when things like Safari, or Java are updated we are not shut out in the cold...

... I know from the past when Java has been updated for Windows, that compatibility with CareLink has been lagging by some weeks.

I wonder if Medtronic involve themselves in the Apple Developers programs where developers get to see pre-release software to to ready themselves for updates?

@Timothy glad to hear you're so excited about the international release of CareLink Personal for Mac (we are too!) I know the fact that CareLink isn’t yet approved for use with Lion is frustrating. So, I thought some additional context around the software development and regulatory approval process for a program like CareLink might be helpful. It can take several months to develop and test any changes that may need to be made due to a new OS. Like other companies, we begin testing with Beta version of a new OS (like Lion). But, we cannot complete the development process until the final version of the software is released (as mentioned in our reply to @Kevin above). And, unlike a lot of other companies whose software is not “medical device software”, once all qualifications testing is complete, CareLink has to be approved by regulatory agencies to ensure it is safe and effective, which can take several months. All combined, this creates a time lag between the release of a new OS and the release of new version of CareLink. I know the time delay can be frustrating, but the development, testing and regulatory approval process are designed to protect the safety of people who rely on healthcare software to manage their diabetes. We do everything we can to get new updates to the market as soon as possible.

Please get the Carelink software compatible with OS 10.7 Lion. It shouldn't take this long. Tracking using the CGM is not a hobby for us parents, and this product and software is critical to our success.

I too, was surprised by Lion causing incompatibilities with CareLink, however, in Medtronic's defense, this isn't some trivial piece of software to develop. It can have real lasting consequences due to something like a small variable being handled incorrectly, which is why the FDA has stringent requirements for testing and ensuring that the software is safe for use.

CareLink isn't the only software that has to be updated to use Lion, and these things sometimes take time, regardless of whether there is a beta release or not. This is why it is not always best to rush into upgrading to the "latest and greatest" simply because one can. I feel for the posters here, however, I'm sure you'd rather have software that delivers correct results and has been put thru the wringer, especially when your life can depend on it.

Please get care link to work with Lion. I just purchased the sensor and I want to be able to access the data with care link. I don't want to have to do it at work because of the sensitive nature of the data. Thank you will advance for letting me know the status and when it is ready.

You should be embarrassed that you do not yet have a version of this software that works with OSX Lion. The days of a single-OS world ended long ago. Welcome to the 21st century...you're lucky insurers protect your business.

Whilst I can understand and accept the explanations about development and regulatory approval processes for the Carelink system, is it not possible to give a realistic estimate for approval and release of the Mac OSX Lion compatible system in the UK...?
I've been using the PC based system for several years and it is extremely useful, but it's a complete pain, and very time consuming, to have to use it through my work computer and network.

1. I use a Mac OSX 10.6.8, I can upload just fine, but when I try to see the reports, I can see one report, but when I try to look at another report it won't show. IF I go back to the home page, and then back to Reports, I can again look at ONE report, and then have to go through this each time I want to see a different report, or even the same type of report but with different dates. Is there a way to fix this?

2. I add my plea to the others for OSX Lion.....I need to upgrade an this is holding me back. Mobile me is going away, and icloud requires Lion. Help!!!

I went through this issue YEARS ago. When I was asked about upgrading to the Revel I specifically asked if I could use my Mac to upload data as well as read it. Sadly, i feel mislead. Most Mac users probably upgrade to Lion at some point if they have not done so yet. We have been using Lion for the past several months. I feel very frustrated that after all these years I am unable to use Carelink with my Mac. Christmas is in a few weeks and I have a lot going on like many..... and would have delayed getting the Revel until the Mac soultion is resolved

I would just like to add that when we had purchased this equipment a few years ago we weren't told it WASN'T mac compatible and in the years since have never been told by anyone that it ever became mac compatible. Thus we paid for it out of pocket only to be told 'sorry not mac compatible and oh you can't return it for a refund.' Now we have found it to be mac compatible BUT sorry - not Lion. FRUSTRATING to say the least. We have been using an iPhone/Pod/Pad application to register my daughter's blood sugar. It has to be done manually but the reading history can be emailed and then opened with Numbers or Excel and modified if needed.

@Lisa Please know we are working very hard on updating CareLink to be compatible with Mac OS 10.7/Lion. I know the time delay can be frustrating, but the development, testing and regulatory approval process are designed to protect the safety of people who rely on healthcare software to manage their diabetes.

Lion was released back in April, with most of the basics out to developers for over almost a full year prior to its release. There are those of us who rely on up-to-date Macs in order to be compatible and competitive with others in our professions. The time delay in getting CareLink compatibility is frustrating because it affects the safety of people who, as a result, do NOT have access to up-to-date healthcare software to manage their diabetes.

Any progress with this issue? I just received a MacBook with Lion and am now CareLink-less. Poor form guys. How long did Windows 7 users have to wait when they upgraded?

Dave

Posted on Wed Dec 21 23:53:26 GMT 2011

I would add my voice to the choir demanding an upgrade to your software. We need Lion to work. It is irritating that a "cutting edge" company like Medtronic can't keep pace. How long did the windows 7 folks go unsupported?

Thomas

Posted on Fri Dec 23 21:27:31 GMT 2011

Dear Medtronic, I'm shocked to read that the CareLink isn't available for Mac OS 10.7 and this since such a long time.
It is bad enough that you do not offer a non web based SW version. This is a reason to change the pump supplier as soon as the contract runs out!
The excuses are more than irritating. Can I get a official statement from the responsible product manager of the medtronic insulin pump on this issue?
Thanks a lot.

How long did the Windows 7 users have to wait for their upgrade to work? I'm guessing not months. I am at my wits end over the recent changes within Minimed and will look to other sources for insulin pumps if this cannot be sorted soon.

Jim

Posted on Tue Jan 03 16:44:10 GMT 2012

I understand the delay due to regulatory approval requirements. I too have now lost the ability to download and view my pump and CGMS data, as well as to best-manage my diabetes based on this info since upgrading. ( and discovering the incompatibility afterwards) Karen: would it be possible to at least inform us of a timeline for the update to be available to us? Thanks

Karrie

I have a new MacBook Pro with 3.0 USB ports and can no longer use the CareLink USB. I was told by Medtronic technical support that the CareLink USB only supports a 2.0 USB port. This is a MAJOR problem as I use CareLink personally and with my endocrinology team. We need Medtronic to develop a CareLink USB for the new 3.0 USB ports. Has anyone found a solution for this problem while we wait for Medtronic to develop this?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Barbara – I’m very sorry, but right now the CareLink USB only supports a 2.0 USB port. We are working on addressing this and, once we have a solution, we’ll be sure to let our community know.

Great question Jim, glad you asked. You may upload your BG meter, pump, and CGM information directly into CareLink from a USB 3.0 port using the Bayer CONTOUR NEXT LINK BG meter. For further details visit http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/products/glucose-meters. You may also find upload steps within CareLink Personal by following these steps:
1) Log in to CareLink Personal
2) Click on “Help”
3) Expand the “Upload” section
4) Read the “Connecting devices to your computer” section

The Carelink page does not work for the latest version of FireFox or Safari or the latest Mac OSX Mavericks. I cannot open it on my Mac. I even tried on my Windows PC and the page would not open due to browser incompatibility. Come on Minimed. My doctor wants readings and I can't send them because I don't have access to the software.

2. Hi MM. I understand your frustration and I’m sorry you’re having issues uploading your reports. CareLink is considered medical device software, and updates are required to go through government regulatory process. This process can take many months, creating a time lag of our new version of CareLink. To see our latest CareLink support information please visit - http://www.medtronicdiabetes.com/support/carelink-personal/. If there’s anything else I can do to help or if you’d like me to connect you with a member of my team to help answer any additional questions, please let me know.
